This timepiece features a case crafted from 18-carat gold-plated metal; the warm golden lustre contrasts beautifully with the transparency of the skeletonised structure, both preserving the classic square, rounded-corner silhouette of the Santos collection and lending the watch a more contemporary expression. The origins of the Santos collection date back to 1904, when Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont that was easy to read whilst flying. The square, rounded-corner dial, integrated curved lugs and exposed screws have since become the collection’s signature elements. In the skeletonised version, these classic features are fully preserved, whilst the dial is replaced by skeletonised bridges in the shape of Roman numerals. These bridges not only serve as hour markers but also form part of the movement’s structure, creating a unique geometric aesthetic.
The watch is powered by the 9611 MC manual-winding mechanical movement, meticulously crafted in the Cartier workshops. Comprising 138 components and fitted with 20 ruby bearings, the movement measures 28 millimetres square and is just 3.97 millimetres thick, yet offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. The movement’s operation is clearly visible through the sapphire crystal case back. The heptagonal crown is set with a multi-faceted sapphire, whilst the sword-shaped blued steel hands glide gracefully over the skeletonised movement, offering a clear and poetic reading of the time.
