To reliably and accurately measure ocean temperatures, a team of volunteer engineers from the Cousteau Divers program, led by Brad Bazemore and Brendan Walters, have developed a portable, precision temperature sensor device. The device will track GPS and underwater navigation information and measure temperature with high accuracy. As a system platform, the device will later encompass other ocean measurements such as conductivity, optical density and pH. With the help of other scientific partners, approximately 50 sensors will be sited and deployed at dive centers around the world. In order to help the global team of divers and engineers to innovate and increase their creativity, the project is open source and all hardware and software designs are available online.
IWC contributes to the Cousteau Divers program to reveal ocean temperatures
The pilot deployment will last for 18 months to collect user feedback and validate the effectiveness of the data collected before a second, larger-scale deployment is carried out. In the meantime, the online platform receives a wide range of oceanographic data. In this way, Cousteau Divers will be able to reveal ocean temperatures scientifically and accurately, in near-real time, and in a low-cost, public-science way: IW376805)
